Strawberry Martini | Martini | Vodka Cocktail - Downton Distillery UK

Strawberry Martini | Martini | Vodka Cocktail

The Strawberry Martini is a modern cocktail rather than a historic classic with one recognised recipe. It emerged during London’s cocktail revival of the 1990s. Bartenders were experimenting with fresh fruit, premium vodka and more theatrical presentation.

Many of these drinks appeared in the distinctive V-shaped Martini glass. The word “Martini” began describing the style of serve rather than its traditional ingredients. These new cocktails were chilled, elegant and visually striking. However, they often contained neither gin nor vermouth.

One early Strawberry Martini recipe appeared in London during the 1990s. It combined muddled strawberries, vodka, sugar syrup and freshly ground black pepper. The pepper sharpened the fruit and added a savoury edge. This prevented the drink from tasting overly sweet or one-dimensional.

Its precise creator remains uncertain, which is common with cocktails from that period. Recipes frequently passed between bartenders, bars and cities without formal attribution. The Strawberry Martini belonged to the same movement that produced the Espresso Martini, Passion Fruit Martini and other modern fruit-led variations.

These drinks helped make fresh ingredients central to the bar experience. They also introduced a wider audience to cocktails served with greater precision and presentation.

The Drink

Our Strawberry Martini is bright, fruit-led and refreshing, with a clean and elegant finish.

We use Chardonnay Vodka to give the cocktail greater depth and structure. Its subtle peppery character works particularly well with ripe strawberries. Fresh lemon juice balances the natural sweetness of the fruit. It adds acidity, sharpens the flavours and keeps the finish crisp.

The optional sugar syrup depends entirely on the ripeness of the strawberries. Sweet summer fruit may require very little additional sugar. Taste the purée before building the cocktail. This simple step allows you to adjust the final balance before shaking.

Serve the drink ice cold in a chilled coupe. The broad bowl showcases its vivid colour while retaining the elegance associated with a Martini-style serve. It works particularly well for summer entertaining, garden parties and tennis afternoons. It also makes a fresh and colourful celebratory aperitif.

The drink should taste of real strawberries rather than confectionery. The vodka should provide structure without overpowering the fruit. The lemon should remain noticeable but controlled. The finished cocktail needs enough acidity to feel refreshing, without becoming sour.
