Meet Merlin— he is part adventurer, part explorer and part dreamer, but 100% determined to take on the world… quite literally! Armed with a sturdy pair of boots, an indomitable spirit, and probably way too many pairs of socks.
In June 2023, he set off to walk around the world—completely unsupported. No shortcuts, no backup crew, just one man, his backpack, a buggy and a whole lot of road ahead. But this isn’t just about testing his limits—it’s about making a difference. Merlin is taking on this epic challenge to raise money for SHINE (Support and Help in Education), helping children and young people access the education they deserve. With every blister and every mile, he’s turning footsteps into opportunities, proving that a single journey really can change lives. This is his story of his journey.

EXPLORERS WHO HAVE WALKED AROUND THE WORLD
Whilst Merlin is not wanting to set any records, who else has walked around the world? If you want to get your name into the Guinness World Records you will need to walk at least 18,000 miles (28,968 km) across four continents, making sure your route is continuous and global. That’s just the start—you’ll also have to prove every step of the way! GPS records, passport stamps, and witness statements are a must, along with plenty of photos and videos at key landmarks. If you take any form of transport, you need to keep the receipts and explain why it was used. Every mile counts, and Guinness World Records will want solid proof that you’ve walked the world.

MERLINS WORDS ON WHY HE IS DOING THIS
It's tough to pin down exactly why I set out on this planet-sized challenge. The more I think about it, the blurrier it gets—a mix of countless motivations, fleeting moments, and long hours staring out the window, wondering. Maybe it started with an overactive imagination as a kid. I dreamed of living every life, doing every job, experiencing every possible version of existence. But reality set in: we only get to be one person, in one place, in one lifetime—a truth that never sat well with me. That discomfort only grew as I followed the expected path from university to an office job, watching my world shrink into something that didn’t quite fit.
Then came my late teens and early twenties, a period of deep reflection forced upon me by loss and uncertainty. Several people close to me battled cancer—some survived, some didn’t, including my dad and a young friend. Life’s randomness hit hard. It made one thing clear: time isn’t guaranteed.
Even before then, I knew I didn’t want the conventional life—a job, a house, a slow march into the expected. But as my twenties ticked by, despite a life many would envy, I felt empty. I chased distractions—hobbies, late-night bar tending shifts—anything to fill the void. Nothing worked.
Eventually, I realized I had two choices: accept this life or throw myself into the wildest adventure imaginable. Go out, see what happens, experience the world in its rawest form. What did I have to lose? Nothing’s promised, certainly not tomorrow. If I make it to old age, I want to look in the mirror and hear, “You gave it a bloody good go, sunshine.”

LONDON TO SPAIN VIA FRANCE
At the end of June 2023 Merlin left London and walked down to the coast via the Devils Punch Bowl. Having crossed the channel by boat he then walked down the French coastline during July 2023 to Spain.
The coast is an awe-inspiring adventure, blending stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultures. From rugged cliffs and WWII landmarks in Normandy and Brittany to the dune-covered beaches and surf towns of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, every step offers something new. As you near Spain, the Basque Country welcomes you with dramatic coastal mountains, picturesque fishing villages, and a unique blend of French and Spanish traditions.
The journey is a sensory delight—cool ocean breezes, fresh seafood, and warm Basque pintxos (bread snacks) to fuel your steps. While long beach stretches and Atlantic winds can be challenging, the rewards are endless: breathtaking views, cultural immersion.
Merlin decided rather than heading to San Sebastián, where world-class cuisine and golden beaches awaited him, he would drop South through the Basque Country to Pamplona.

SPAIN - THE CAMINO FRANCES
The Camino Francés has become the most famous and historically significant route of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage that dates back to the 9th century when the remains of Saint James (Santiago) were discovered in Galicia. This path, stretches approximately 780 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. During the Middle Ages, the Camino Francés thrived, with monasteries, hospitals, and hostels springing up along the way to care for weary travelers. It played a crucial role in cultural and economic exchanges between Europe and Spain, contributing to the spread of art, architecture, and traditions.
Merlin's Spanish leg followed part of the Camino Frances . The Spanish leg started with the tough Pyrenees crossing, which then passed through the lush wine region of La Rioja, followed by the vast and sometimes punishing Meseta. The Meseta is an open vast expanse of rolling plains that feel endless. Some walkers love it, others find it mentally grueling— for Merlin it was apparently nice to have no hills. Just after Santa Colomba he turned south towards the Portuguese border and Braganca via the Sierra de la Culebra national park.

PORTUGAL
Walking 500km from Bragança to Lisbon sounds like a dream—winding trails, breathtaking landscapes, and the sweet reward of pastel de nata at the finish line. But make no mistake—this trek is no fairytale. It’s a brutal test of endurance. The mountains of Trás-os-Montes don’t gently roll—they rise steeply, daring you to turn back. Merlin battled relentless summer heat, following the Camino Portugal central route, trudging through vast stretches where villages were scarce, making finding an ice-cold drink a rare luxury. When he finally reached Mêda, he discovered it was practically deserted—another casualty of rural depopulation, as younger generations move to the cities.
Then there were the wild mountain dogs—territorial, snarling beasts that appeared out of nowhere, sizing him up like a walking buffet. Yet, despite the hardships—aching feet, blistering sunburn, and exhaustion—he pressed on, fueled by stunning views, kind strangers, and the sheer thrill of the challenge.
On October 5th, 2023, he arrived in Lisbon, completing the European leg of his journey with some impressive stats:
- 1 toenail
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 3 waist sizes lost
- 75 days on foot
- 2,000km traveled
- 2,600,000 steps taken
- 1 very questionable beard

FINAL THOUGHTS
Everyone dreams of adventure—of stepping away from routine, taking risks, and embracing the unknown. As we sit behind desks or stare out of windows during yet another mind-numbing meeting, we often find ourselves longing to be elsewhere. The world is full of stunning landscapes, rich cultures, and unexpected friendships, yet fear and financial constraints too often hold us back.
Merlin refused to let that happen. Instead of staying trapped by convention, he chose to break free, fuelled by curiosity and a desire for something more. Losing loved ones reshaped his perspective, pushing him toward a path where each day brings new horizons, fresh challenges, and endless possibilities.
In his first leg he has achieved what only a handful have done. Tracking the exact number of people who have walked from London through France and Spain to Lisbon is difficult, as no official record exists for such journeys. However, the World Walking platform offers a virtual "London to Lisbon" route, with 548 participants completing the challenge digitally. While this reflects interest in the trek, it doesn’t account for those who have physically undertaken the journey. Given the sheer logistical demands and lack of formal tracking, it’s likely that only a handful of adventurers have braved this epic overland expedition, of which Merlin is now one.
