Every walk tells a different story.
Life on the Downs
Experience one of the world's rarest landscapes through the birds, wildlife and changing seasons that inspire life at Downton Distillery. Every sighting is real. Every story comes from the Downs.
Some days we make gin but every day nature puts on a show.
MONTHLY Field Journal
Some sightings last only a few moments, while others become the highlight of an entire season. Here are the species that have made us stop over the last month, watch and appreciate the remarkable wildlife that calls the Downs home.
THE SEASONS
High on the Wiltshire Downs, Downton Distillery is surrounded by ancient chalk grassland, rolling farmland and miles of open countryside. Formed over millions of years, this remarkable landscape is one of Britain's richest habitats for wildlife. Chalk grassland is among the world's rarest ecosystems, often compared to tropical rainforest for the incredible diversity of plants, insects and birds it supports.
Every day on the Downs is different.
More than 70% of the UK's chalk grassland has disappeared over the last century, making places like this increasingly precious. As the seasons change, so do the wildlife, colours and sounds that surround us. Spring brings fresh growth and birdsong, summer fills the hills with colour and life, autumn welcomes migrating visitors, and winter reveals a landscape shaped by frost, wind and vast open skies.
Many people visit us for the gin. They leave talking about the Downs.
Join us throughout the year as we share the wildlife, landscapes and unforgettable moments we encounter on our daily walks through this extraordinary corner of Wiltshire.

SOME OF OUR RARE SIGHTINGS
The Wiltshire Downs are more than a home for resident wildlife. They are a natural highway for migrating birds travelling across Britain and beyond. Every spring and autumn, familiar species are joined by seasonal visitors stopping to rest and feed before continuing their remarkable journeys. Occasionally, the unexpected appears. A scarce migrant carried off course by changing weather, an unusual bird pausing for a single day, or a species rarely recorded in the county. These fleeting encounters are part of what makes the Downs so special.
Below are some of the birds that we have appearing within the distillery garden. On Tours, Hugh will point the wildlife out to you should it appear.
Nature's Smallest Engineers
Small Creatures. Vital Roles.
The smallest residents of the distillery garden often have the greatest impact. Discover the insects that pollinate, hunt, recycle and help shape one of Britain's richest wildlife habitats.
SMALL BUT MIGHTY
Just four years ago our distillery garden was overgrown with nettles, brambles and disused brown land. Slowly it has been transformed, where it is now a thriving ecosystem. Wildflowers, herbs and native planting support an astonishing variety of insects. Every season brings new discoveries, proving that even a small space can become a haven for wildlife. Below are some of the insects that we have appearing within the distillery garden.
