AWARDS | IWSC reveals shortlist for its 2024 Green Spirit Initiative

Sustainability is becoming a defining issue for the global spirits industry. Distilleries now face growing pressure to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining quality and authenticity.

To recognise these efforts, the International Wine & Spirit Competition launched the Green Spirit Initiative Trophy in 2022. The award celebrates producers who demonstrate meaningful and measurable progress towards sustainability.

The trophy rewards more than individual projects. Judges look for businesses that embed environmental thinking throughout their operations.

Every aspect of production is considered. This includes sourcing, energy use, packaging, logistics, waste reduction, and community engagement.

This year, more than a dozen spirits producers entered the competition. The entries represented a wide range of categories and production styles.

Each application detailed the steps being taken to improve environmental performance. Judges reviewed the submissions carefully and assessed the overall impact of each programme.

The judging panel consisted of highly respected industry experts. Their experience covered spirits production, buying, consultancy, and drinks journalism.

The panel included Dawn Davies MW, Head Buyer at Speciality Drinks. David T Smith, spirits writer and consultant, also served as a judge.

Joining them were drinks writer and distillery consultant Olivier Ward. Independent drinks consultant Shannon Tebay completed the panel.

The judges examined each application in detail. They looked for evidence of long-term commitment rather than isolated initiatives.

After extensive discussion, five producers were selected for the 2024 shortlist. Each demonstrated a clear and holistic approach to sustainability.

We were delighted to learn that Downton Distillery had been shortlisted. The recognition places us alongside several internationally respected producers.

As a small independent distillery, this achievement was particularly meaningful. It recognised years of work focused on reducing environmental impact.

The 2024 Green Spirit Initiative Trophy shortlist includes:

  • Maker's Mark, USA
  • Bingil Bay Distillery, Australia
  • Downton Distillery, United Kingdom
  • Starward Whisky, Australia
  • Distinct Distillers, United Kingdom

The shortlist reflects a broad range of sustainability approaches. Each producer has developed solutions suited to its own business and environment.

For Downton Distillery, sustainability influences every major decision. This includes renewable energy, refill systems, recycled materials, and biodiversity projects.

Being recognised by the IWSC provides valuable industry validation. It also demonstrates that smaller producers can help lead positive change.

The winner of the 2024 Green Spirit Initiative Trophy will be announced on 12 November. The presentation will take place during the IWSC Awards Celebration.

Whatever the outcome, we are proud to stand alongside these pioneering producers. Their work is helping shape a more sustainable future for the spirits industry.
