Lemon verbena is one of the most distinctive botanicals used in Explorer’s Gin. It grows in our distillery garden, its delicate leaves releasing a clean, citrus fragrance that cuts through the air on warm days. Known scientifically as Aloysia citrodora, it’s a plant that embodies freshness and clarity a natural fit for the Explorer’s spirit.
We use lemon verbena for the brightness it brings. Its lemony aroma is crisp and uplifting, balancing the deeper notes of our other botanicals such as juniper, and cedar. During distillation, the essential oils release a refined, zesty top note that gives Explorer’s Gin its unmistakable freshness.
It is a plant known for its calming and restorative qualities. Traditionally used to ease digestion, reduce inflammation, and support sleep, it’s rich in antioxidants and essential oils that help combat stress and fatigue. Its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it a true botanical powerhouse — gentle, versatile, and deeply beneficial.
It seems to thrive on our chalky soil and open sunshine much like the spirit of the land itself. Though it does need protection over the winter months. With the right care, lemon verbena will reward you year after year with its vivid fragrance and delicate lemon flavour — perfect for teas, desserts, and gin distillation.
