Dirty Martini | Martini | Gin Cocktail

The Dirty Martini is one of the world's most iconic cocktails. Elegant, savoury, and wonderfully simple, it has remained a favourite for more than a century. The Martini itself is often described as the king of cocktails. Its origins are debated, although many historians believe it evolved from the Martinez during the late nineteenth century. The Dirty Martini appeared shortly afterwards when olive brine was added to the classic recipe.

That small addition changed everything. Olive brine introduced salinity, texture, and a savoury character that complemented the botanicals within the gin. The result was a cocktail with greater depth and complexity.

At its core, the Martini relies on just two ingredients. Gin provides structure and botanical flavour, while vermouth contributes herbal notes and balance. Vermouth is an aromatised wine infused with herbs, roots, spices, and botanicals.

Few people appreciate a Dirty Martini more than Martha Sitwell. It is undoubtedly her favourite cocktail. In fact, her preference is simple. The dirtier the Martini, the better.

Her rescued magpie, Hecate, is often close by when a Martini is being enjoyed. Together they have become inseparable companions and enthusiastic ambassadors for this timeless cocktail.

The Dirty Martini remains proof that a handful of ingredients can create something truly unforgettable.
