Adventurer | Lucy Shepard | The Amazon

Our Explorer of the Month is adventurer Lucy Shepherd, a modern explorer whose achievements already place her amongst the most accomplished expedition leaders of her generation.

At just 23 years old, Lucy became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. She also became the youngest council member of the Scientific Exploration Society, an organisation dedicated to supporting exploration and scientific discovery around the world.

Her expeditions have taken her into some of the planet's most demanding environments. She has crossed Norway's vast Finnmarksvidda Plateau twice, enduring extreme weather and isolation far from civilisation.

In 2013, Lucy retraced the famous Heroes of Telemark journey and Operation Grouse. This historic wartime mission took place in some of Norway's most challenging winter terrain.

She has also experienced the brutal conditions of Mount Denali in Alaska. During one expedition, severe weather trapped her inside a tent for two weeks. Temperatures fell to around minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Most people would consider such experiences enough adventure for a lifetime. For Lucy, they were only the beginning.

Her current challenge takes her deep into one of the world's last great wildernesses. Lucy is traversing the remote Kanuku Mountain Range in Guyana, an area bordering the vast Amazon rainforest.

Large parts of this region remain poorly mapped and rarely visited. The landscape consists of dense jungle, steep mountains, powerful rivers, and extraordinary biodiversity.

Exploring such terrain requires far more than physical endurance. Success depends upon navigation skills, planning, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm when conditions become difficult.

The Amazon remains one of the most fascinating places on Earth. It contains countless species, hidden ecosystems, and landscapes that few people will ever witness firsthand.

Lucy represents a new generation of explorers. Her expeditions combine adventure, scientific curiosity, and a desire to better understand the natural world.

At a time when many assume exploration is finished, Lucy Shepherd proves the opposite. There are still remote places to discover, questions to answer, and boundaries to push. Her Amazon expedition is a reminder that true exploration remains very much alive.
